FDA Advisory Committee Meeting To Review Egrifta – The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will hold a public meeting to discuss the safety and efficacy of Egrifta (tesamorelin), a drug under development and submitted for FDA approval by Theratechnologies, Inc. The proposed use for Egrifta is to induce and maintain a reduction of excess abdominal fat in HIV patients with lipodystrophy, a condition in which abnormal deposits of fat result from using certain HIV treatments. The meeting will be held on May 27 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Inn and Conference Center at the University of Maryland University College, Adelphi, MD. No registration is required. Documentary Raises Awareness About HIV Among Latina Women – This past summer, a junior at the University of Houston, Erica Fletcher, spent one month researching and filming her documentary “Marianismo.” In her documentary, she attempts to capture the cultural factors that may explain the disproportionate number of Latina women who live with HIV. The 20-minute final version of “Marianismo” centers around Fletcher’s interviews with three HIV-positive Latina women in the Houston area. AIDS Activists From Haiti Participate In Panel – A public panel and discussion titled “Keith D. Cylar Activist Awards and Panel: Addressing AIDS In Haiti After the Earthquake” will focus on post-earthquake efforts and will feature five Haiti-based AIDS activists affiliated with Haiti’s national AIDS coalition PHAP+. The event will be held on April 1 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m at Lang Cafe at the New School in New York City. Earthquake Leaves Haiti HIV/AIDS Efforts Reeling, UN Calls For International Aid

By the start of 2010, Haiti had begun to make strides towards alleviating the high HIV prevalence plaguing the nation. However, in the wake of the catastrophic earthquake this past January, the country is in dire need of foreign aid to rebuild the HIV/AIDS program it once had, lest what progress had been made is lost.

Before the quake, Haiti had an adult HIV prevalence of 2.2 percent and a total of approximately 120,000 people living with HIV. These thousands accounted for 47 percent of all people living with HIV…

After The Earthquake: Battling HIV And AIDS In Haiti

After suffering a devastating earthquake last week, Haiti now faces the challenge of repairing its damaged healthcare system. Among those affected will include HIV and AIDS patients.

Eight hospitals near Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, have been either damaged or destroyed. Other medical facilities are now busy serving survivors of the earthquake.

With all the destruction, HIV and AIDS patients may find it difficult to access their medications.
