New York To Tighten Monitoring Of Inmate HIV Care– A bill that calls for heightened monitoring of inmates’ HIV and hepatitis C treatment now awaits approval from New York Governor David Paterson. The new measure requires the NY State Health Department to conduct annual reviews of HIV and hepatitis C care in state and local prisons. Currently, the Department of Correctional Services has had this responsibility. About 3,100 inmates in NY are HIV positive and approximately 7,000 have hepatitis C at this time. Bill sponsor Sen. The European Union Grants Isentress Use In Treatment-Naïve Patients– On Tuesday, Merck Sharp & Dohme Limited announced that the European Union Commission has approved an expanded license for its antiretroviral Isentress (raltegravir) for use in combination therapy. The new agreement now includes use in treatment-naïve adult patients, in addition to treatment-experienced adult patients. The change follows the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s approval of Isentress for treatment-naïve adult patients in July. Mylan’s Matrix Limited Receives Tentative Approval For A 3-in-1 Combined Pill–On Wednesday, Mylan Inc.’s Matrix Laboratories Limited announced its tentative U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval for a new combined pill containing three anti-HIV drugs. As part of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, Sustiva (efavirenz), Epivir (lamivudine), and Viread (tenofovir disoproxil fumarate), will be offered in a single-dose tablet to be taken once a day. The combined pill will only be eligible for purchase outside the U.S. Mylan hopes it will improve the state of HIV treatment in developing countries.
